In the December 2010 issue of the REFLECTOR we published excerpts of a letter from Capt. Joe Streckfus, General Manager of Streckfus Steamers in St. Louis, addressed to his three brothers and requesting their recommendations for a proposed new excursion boat or boats to be built for the company. The letter, written in 1928, pre-dates the actual start of construction of the PRESIDENT in 1933 and ADMIRAL in 1937 by more than five years. It is the earliest record we have of their plans to acquire a new boat to update their fleet of four wood-hulled steamers acquired from the Diamond Jo Line in 1911. That the new boat would have a steel hull (or a steel “bottom”) was a foregone conclusion. However whether it would be steam or diesel powered was still open to discussion.
