The following images of the DELTA QUEEN were captured by our very own Dale Flick in the early 60’s in and around Cincinnati, Ohio.
(Click on any of the images for a slide show and comments from Dale.)
Bitter winter of 1962/’63 on the old GREENE LINE STEAMERS wharfboat on the laid up DQ. Ice down river with Jonson Party Boat CHAPERONE laid up.
View looking out from interior of GREENE LINE STEAMERS wharfboat to the Cincinnati Public Landing in the early 1960s. The classic old buildings at the ‘top of the hill’ had not yet been demolished for the then new development for the stadium and arena. I did a full series of the landing, all the old buildings and sent to Fred Way.
DQ laid up with work being done on her port engine, crank and cams with tarp stretched over. This in 1960s.
Cincinnati Public Landing from Covington, KY. Winter of 1962/’63 with temps on/around 5 above -0-. Took this using my German single reflex camera with a lens filter for the winter light. Gives a full view of the Cincinnati skyline and old landing then.
DELTA QUEEN winter 1962/’63 ‘frozen in’ at the wharfboat with ice around, steam up with stack smoke rolling to keep her interior warm to prevent frozen pipes. Cal Benefel would fire the boat up really hot inside; then open interior cabin doors and spaces to allow heat against outside walls etc. This always a problem with the DQ in winter generally. The wharfboat then had a big coal fired gravity furnace for the offices with coal smoke you see here belching out.
